St. Patrick’s Day Shamrock Pendant

Celebrate the “luck of the Irish” with this special St. Patrick’s Day craft. Have a parent help you!

Materials

  • Polymer clay – any brand – green and gold
  • Liquid polymer clay
  • Acrylic roller or wooden dowel
  • Clay knife or plastic knife
  • Toothpick or bamboo skewer
  • Cookie or fondant cutters – hearts and circles
  • Work surface –ceramic tile, file folder or wax paper

NOTE: It is recommended that you use a clay-only oven (toaster oven). You can also enclose your project inside two baking pans (clamped closed) and bake in a regular oven.

Instructions

  1. Condition the green clay by rolling and squeezing it in your hands. Test to see if it cracks when you bend it, if it does that means it needs more conditioning.
  2. Roll the clay into a ball, flatten it and roll it out to desired thickness with your acrylic roller or dowel (you can also use a clay-dedicated pasta machine).
  3. Using your cookie cutters, cut three hearts and a strip for the stem.
  4. Arrange the three hearts into a shamrock shape as shown.
  5. Be sure to reinforce the edges that touch with a dab of liquid clay.
  6. Add the stem in desired position - also reinforcing with liquid clay.
  7. You can leave it as is or add a gold circle "coin" to hide the seams using the same method of rolling out and cutting the clay. Add a dab of liquid clay under this as well.
  8. Poke a hole for hanging if this will be an ornament or necklace.
  9. Add any detail with your toothpick or skewer.
  10. Bake according to manufacturer's directions and let cool.
  11. Glaze if desired. You can also embellish with crystals if so desired.
