Let Freedom ring with Images of Freedom

This February, Columbia Association honors Black History Month with the seventh annual “Images of Freedom” poster contest. Using pencils, inks, markers or paints to create images that reflect equality, justice and a resounding hope for peace, middle and high school students from across the county artistically expressed the true meaning of freedom.

From the American Flag to the noble eagle to the Statue of Liberty, each inspiring image evokes the vision that all races can live together in harmony and that diversity should be celebrated and embraced.

The five winning entries will be showcased on Howard County Transit vehicles throughout February in honor of Black History Month. They will also be on display at the Roots of Howard County event on Sunday, February 21, at Historic Oakland Manor in Town Center. For more information on Roots of Howard County, click here.

Later this month, CA President Phil Nelson will host a reception at Columbia Art Center honoring contest participants. The Art Center will also have a special gallery exhibition displaying all of the Images of Freedom artwork from February 18-28. This exhibit is free and open to the public. Columbia Art Center is located at 6100 Foreland Garth in Columbia. For gallery hours, visit ColumbiaArtCenter.org.

Nobel Prize-winning author William Faulkner once said, “We must be free not because we claim freedom, but because we practice it.” Although the Images of Freedom contest focuses on Black History Month, it is evident that freedom has no color. Freedom is, quite simply, something to desire, something to cherish and something that we, as a community and as a nation, should all strive to achieve.

Images of Freedom is sponsored by CA, Corridor Transportation Corporation and the Howard County Office of Public Information.
