Discover Howard County's "Roots"

A Woman of Distinction, Malynda Madzel will serve as moderator for the discussion panel.

The Villages of Columbia are pleased to announce the fifth annual presentation of “Roots of Howard County” in celebration of African American History on Sunday, February 21, from 3-5pm at Historic Oakland Manor (5430 Vantage Point Road, Columbia, Maryland). Admission is free, and there is no snow date.

From 3-4pm, guests can visit the Howard County Center of African American Culture, located in the Rose Price House next door to Historic Oakland. At Oakland Manor, visitors can also enjoy free light refreshments, musical entertainment provided by the Ellington-Adderley Jazz Ensemble and a display of the “Images of Freedom” poster entries created by Howard County students.

From 4-5pm, the program will feature a panel of “Women of Distinction.”  Scheduled speakers include Diane Brown, columnist, Patuxent Publishing; Wylene Burch, director, Howard County Center of African American Culture; Alice P. Clark, judge, District Court of Maryland; and Dottie Moore, former head, Community Action Council. Malynda Madzel, who has served on various community boards and foundations, will serve as discussion facilitator.

The program has been expanded to include a tribute to former Columbia Association President Maggie Brown by Columbia Association Board Member Pearl Atkinson-Stewart at 3:45 p.m. in the Ballroom. Additionally, a DVD celebrating the life of Maggie Brown will be shown continuously in the Library, along with a photo display.

This event is being held in partnership with the Howard County Center of African American Culture, the Villages of Columbia (Dorsey’s Search, Harper’s Choice, Hickory Ridge, Kings Contrivance, Long Reach, Oakland Mills, Owen Brown, River Hill, Town Center and Wilde Lake) and the Columbia Association.
