Empty Bowls to help the homeless

Empty BowlsColumbia Art Center ceramics staff and volunteers have been hard at work shaping, trimming, firing and glazing 300 bowls for an upcoming fundraiser. The event offers affordable pottery at nearly half the cost of buying a bowl at a gallery, all while supporting local charities.

This year’s Empty Bowls fundraiser will be held Saturday, May 1, at 5:30pm at Columbia Art Center. Tickets are $20 and include a ceramic bowl and dinner, with proceeds benefitting the Route 1 Day Center in Laurel, Maryland. Festivities will include studio demonstrations, live music, raffles and a silent art auction. For more information, please call 410-730-0075.

Route 1 Day Center serves the homeless along the Route 1 corridor, providing showers, laundry, clothing, internet access, phone, mailing address, basic living supplies, conversation and referrals to social services.

“Our Empty Bowls event gives the Art Center a wonderful opportunity to reach out in the community and use ‘art’ to make a difference,” Art Center Manager Liz Henzey explains.

There will be a wide selection of bowls to choose from, each one unique. They will appeal to a variety of tastes, having been reviewed by several committees to represent the best.

It is very labor intensive to create pottery; however, the rewards from the Empty Bowls fundraiser are more than worth the effort. Liz Henzey proudly remarks: “With the talents of our students and teachers who volunteered numerous hours to creating the bowls and with the support of Columbia Association, local restaurants and businesses, artists and musicians, we are able to provide a fun family evening for residents while raising awareness and funds for a local charity.”

The Empty Bowls fundraiser is anything but “empty.” It is, indeed, a noble effort filled with creativity, commitment and, above all, compassion for those less fortunate in our community.

The Columbia Art Center is located at 6100 Foreland Garth, Columbia, MD 21045. For more information, please visit www.ColumbiaArtCenter.org or call 410-730-0075 or email art.staff@columbiaassociation.com
